RIVER'S FIJI TRIP

A MATHMUSICIAN'S ADVENTURE

After 6 months of running, baking, getting electrocuted and lots of planning; I finally made it onto my first out of Europe trip to the other side of the world. I made the decision of coming out to Fiji through a mere last-minute plan in December, filling the empty holiday space in my calendar.

What made the trip so appealing was the chance to develop my teaching skills, in particular with mathematics and observing the similarities and differences in curriculum and teaching strategies to the UK. The added bonus of joining Think Pacific was the flexibility of achieving your own project goals and from the start, I wanted to immerse myself in the musical culture of Fiji whilst teaching Music to local school children. This culminated into one of the most thrilling and rewarding 30 minutes of my life where all 200 pupils in the local school all took part in a musical festival of dance, percussion and singing.

The fundraising of the project seemed like a monumental challenge considering I have never planned a trip outside of the UK before! The training through orienteering and the gym lead towards completing my first half marathon at Thorpe Park followed closely by a Tougher Mudder with ice baths and countless hills. To complement this, I ran a cake sale in my university in the run-up to exams which lecturers and students enjoyed! A special thanks go to Tash, Sarah, Paola, Aria, Fiorenza and Kathy for some superb cake baking and selling!

All this lead to £1,000 raised in project fees alone!
